Solo Sailing Journey – Jason, a new sailor, is navigating a 60-year-old Pearson Triton through the Great Lakes from Michigan to Georgian Bay, covering 450 nautical miles.
Back Injury Setback – He injured his lower back a few days prior, making basic tasks like starting the motor and raising the anchor painful and difficult.
Stranded at Anchorage – While anchored at Haywood Island, he realizes his mistake of traveling while injured, as it prevents him from even fishing or doing light boat maintenance.
Determination to Continue – Despite the pain, he refuses to ask for help from nearby boaters, believing he must handle the situation himself.
Departure with Challenges – He decides to leave the anchorage by motoring out, as wind conditions are favorable for sailing once he’s in open waters.
Motor and Fuel Issues – His motor experiences fuel supply problems, likely due to a valve issue, which he troubleshoots while drifting near shore.
Sailing to Killarney – Once the motor issue is resolved, he sets sail using only the head sail, avoiding the main sail to reduce strain on his back.
Weather Conditions and Strategy – With about 9-10 knots of wind, he enjoys a smooth sail before switching to motor power near Killarney due to increased boat traffic and obstacles.
Docking Assistance – Upon arrival at Killarney, he calls the marina on channel 68 for docking assistance, and locals help him secure his boat.
Rest and Recovery – Planning to stay for two nights, he checks into the marina, takes a shower, and enjoys amenities like Wi-Fi, a restaurant, a pool, and a sauna.
