The Department of Art History Leiden presents the Online Museum Talk of Maximiliaan Martens, Professor at Ghent University (14 October 2020).
In 2020, the Museum of Fine Arts Ghent organized the largest Jan van Eyck exhibition ever. Only about twenty works of the Flemish master have been preserved worldwide. At least half of them traveled to the museum to show how Van Eyck had started an optical revolution in his time. Van Eyck inspired generations of painters by greatly improving oil painting technique. Moreover, his meticulous observation of reality among others show a deep-rooted interest in the painting of light. Max Martens was the driving force behind the exhibition and the central ideas behind it. Although due to the corona-crisis it had to close earlier than planned, it still was a huge success with the Wall Street Journal praising it as follows: “So unlikely to be repeated that the museum might as well use ‘now or never’”.
