In February 2019, Yale Opera staged Tchaikovsky’s 'Eugene Onegin' at New Haven’s Shubert Theatre. Soprano Lauren McQuistin ’19MMA, who shared the role of Tatiana with soprano Madeline Ehlinger ’20MM, reminded us recently that “one of the most important antidotes for hopelessness is connection.”
“When hopelessness comes from an unknown that is so indescribable, the perfect antithesis is the dazzling, mysterious hope of music,” McQuistin said. “In opera, simple sentences turn into screams of joy, frustration, and pain that connect both performer and listener to the world of music, literature, history, and art—realms that are more powerful than we can comprehend. Music is eternal, a reminder that ‘this too will pass,’ and as it passes we can feel everything we need to in a comfortable space, with timeless stories like ‘Eugene Onegin.’"
Here's an excerpt from Act I (from Yale Opera’s Feb. 17, 2019, performance) that features McQuistin, mezzo-soprano Rachel Weishoff ’19MMA (Olga), tenor Luis Aguilar Regalado '18MM '19MMA (Lenski), and baritone Matthew Cossack '19MMA (Onegin).
