Welcome to Alma 24 House, a breathtaking lakeside retreat designed by Maria José Benech + Stéphane Asselin on the northwest shore of Lake Saint-Jean, Quebec, Canada. This 184m² home is a harmonious blend of modern architecture and natural beauty, offering a serene escape from urban life while celebrating the unique character of its surroundings.
The project began with the restoration of the site, dismantling an abandoned summer pavilion to reveal the natural topography and minimize deforestation. The new residence is positioned parallel to the shore, freeing the protected coastal strip and maximizing panoramic views of the lake.
The design emphasizes a close connection with nature, using natural materials to reflect the wild authenticity of the site. The house is articulated to resonate with its environment: it fuses with the rocky landscape, connects to the forest, and opens up to the lake. The two-level structure minimizes its footprint, with the upper volume appearing to float above the terrain, preserving privacy while offering stunning views.
Wild and native species surround the residence, restoring the property’s original character and blending the architecture with its natural context. Whether as a summer retreat with semi-outdoor spaces connected to the beach or a cozy winter cottage overlooking the frozen lake, Alma 24 House provides a year-round connection to the landscape.
