“So far, we have several Eurofighters stationed in Constanta, Romania. In the future, we will also have several Eurofighters stationed in Malbork, Poland. This will make us more active and even more present and visible on the eastern border of the Alliance. Specifically, we will contribute to the protection of the eastern flank with patrol flights.”

7. SOUNDBITE (German) Boris Pistorius, German Defense Minister:
“Mr. Rutte has presented a plan to strengthen drone defense. In light of recent incidents, this can only be welcomed. Germany will of course also make a visible contribution here. Above all, we want to ensure that the many individual measures mesh together like gears. And in order to achieve and guarantee this in the coming years, Germany will invest 10 billion (euros which is approx. $11.6 billion) in drones of all types, altitudes, attack and defense drones in the coming years, in accordance with the budget plans.”

STORYLINE:
Germany will deploy Eurofighter jets to a Polish airbase as part of NATO’s efforts to bolster defenses along the alliance’s eastern flank, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced Thursday.
Speaking on the sidelines of a NATO defense ministers' meeting in Brussels, Pistorius said the German aircraft will be stationed at the Malbork military airbase in northern Poland.
The deployment is part of NATO’s Eastern Sentry mission, launched in September in response to suspected Russian drone incursions into Polish airspace.
The Eastern Sentry initiative aims to strengthen air surveillance and defense capabilities among NATO members neighboring Russia.
Germany has already contributed four Eurofighters from its air base in Rostock-Laage, which are capable of conducting armed patrols over Polish territory.
The new deployment is expected to begin in December and continue through at least March 2026.
Alongside its air defense commitment, Germany will invest 10 billion euros, that's approximately $11.6 billion, in a range of drone systems, including combat-capable models, as part of its broader military modernization efforts.
