The Battle of Antietam was the bloodiest single day in American History and part of the final action of the battle was around a stone bridge across Antietam Creek. Union General Ambrose Burnside's 9th Corps made multiple assaults to capture the west bank of the creek from stubborn Georgians, and once across, launched a massive assault against the lightly defended Confederate right flank until support from Confederate General Ambrose Powell Hill's division came in and stopped the ranks of blue troops from overrunning their position.
