Scabies is an infestation of the skin by the human itch mite. It is characterized by superficial burrows in the skin, intense itching, and secondary infection. Scabies is caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei.

How is Scabies Spread?
• Scabies is transmitted by skin-to-skin contact with an infected person
• Scabies epidemics occur in;
 Nursing homes
 Extended-care facilities
 Prisons
Where do scabies mites live on your body?
• Folds between the fingers and toes.
• Under fingernails.
• Under rings, watch bands and bracelets.
• Along the insides of the wrists.
• On the inner elbows.
• Around the waist.
• On the chest, the area around your nipples and breast creases.
• Around the belly button and the area around your waist.
• Folds in your thighs and genital area.
• Bends of your knees.
• The area around the buttocks.
What are the signs and symptoms of scabies infestation?
• Itching, mainly at night.
• Rash.
• Sores.
• Thick crusts on the skin.
Types of scabies;
• Norwegian scabies
• Nodular scabies
How is scabies treated?
• Permethrin cream.
• Sulfur cream.
• Ivermectin (Stromectol).
• Lindane 1%.
• 25% benzyl benzoate.
• Gamma hexachloride.
Complications of Scabies;
• Skin sores from scratching.
• Sores can become infected with bacteria causing septicemia.
• Impetigo.
