Cloud Tank II is a collection of experiments I started four years ago.
Initially this began as a foray into the world of SFX, beginning with a fascination with the Trumbull Cloud Tank effect; a tank filled with water in two layers - a salt water lower layer and a fresh water top layer. When you spray inks, paints and dyes into this they bounce off the salt water layer and produce stunning cloud like effects.
I experimented with different water temperatures, salt density, various inks and dyes, milk, oil and dissolvable tablets, which you'll see as the video progresses and gets a little more disordered (just like the experiments did!).
What's fun with this is it's all shot in different ways; some with the original bmpcc at 24fps, some with the newer P4K in 120fps. A mixture of glass too, mainly an old Pentax 50mm, which was absolutely my favourite in terms of the look, though it's pretty soft.
As a 3D artist it's great fun to tinker with these old school effects, even though we have the ability to run sims on a GPU and render in any colour, there's something magical about the Cloud Tank effect.
