In Parshat Naso, we read a detailed account of the dedication of the altar by the twelve tribal leaders of Israel. One by one, each prince brings a gift. And while it may seem repetitive, the Torah doesn't waste words. Every detail points to something deeper—something prophetic.

It all starts with Nahshon ben Amminadav, the leader of the tribe of Judah. But strangely, the Torah doesn’t call him “prince” (נשיא) like it does for the others. It simply says:
“On the first day, Nahshon son of Amminadav of the tribe of Judah brought his offering” (Numbers 7:12).

Why is this title missing for Nahshon?

One possible answer: because Nahshon wasn’t the true Prince of Judah. He was only the forerunner. The real Nasi—the Prince—would come later. In Ezekiel 34:24, God says,
“My servant David will be prince among them.”

This is a prophecy about Messiah ben David, the one who will stand at the center of Israel’s future temple service, just like Nahshon did during the inauguration of the Tabernacle.

And there’s more. Ezekiel 45 tells us that the Messianic Temple will be inaugurated on the same day Nahshon brought his offering—the first day of the first month.

Nahshon’s gift was no random assortment. According to Midrash Rabbah, each element symbolized aspects of the tribe of Judah and the Messianic line:

A silver dish and bowl—representing dominion over sea and land

Weights of 130 and 70 shekels—numerically linked to the sea, Solomon’s temple, and the 70 nations

Oil-mixed flour—for the anointing of kings

A golden incense pan—symbolizing the 10 generations from Perez to David

And animals that represent the patriarchs and the kings of Israel

Even if Nahshon didn’t realize the full depth of what he was doing, the Torah does. His act was a foreshadowing of the Messiah, the ultimate Nasi, who will offer the true and final atonement.

As Paul wrote in Colossians 2:16–17, the festivals, new moons, and Sabbaths—and by extension, these offerings—are a shadow of things to come. The substance belongs to Messiah.

The Lamb slain from the foundation of the world (Revelation 13:8) was already in view, even in the wilderness. Messiah Yeshua, who atones not only for our sins but also for the sins of the whole world (1 John 2:2), is the fulfillment of what Nahshon only hinted at.
