The controversial Telkom Towers project is once again under scrutiny after explosive testimony by Lieutenant General Yolisa Matakata during a parliamentary hearing.
The building was originally purchased by the South African Police Service for around R695 million, but renovation costs and additional spending eventually pushed the total price to approximately R1.6 billion.
Despite all that money being spent, the building remains unoccupied and plagued with safety and compliance issues.
During the hearing, Julius Malema, leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters, questioned Matakata about corruption allegations, PPE procurement during the COVID-19 pandemic, and possible political interference in investigations.
Matakata also revealed that after raising concerns about procurement and spending practices, she was suspended for more than three years, raising further questions about accountability and transparency.
