This video was shot the night of June 22 at a wedding, which was scheduled at the Ontario Science Centre. Let's not make it the last!

On June 21, 2024, the Progressive Conservative government of Ontario shocked residents when they announced the immediate closure of the beloved Ontario Science Centre, stating that roof panels could collapse under heavy snow. There is much controversy surrounding this closure.
The high risk and critical roof panels in need of replacement constitute less than 2.5% of the roof, and are mostly not above exhibit spaces. It's been said that it will cost more to move the Science Centre - to its temporary location - than to repair the damaged roof panels.
The PC government announced plans to build a new, half-sized, Science Centre, next to a controversial luxury spa on the old grounds of Ontario Place, instead of maintaining the current one. Preliminary analysis indicates that building new will create 7x more carbon emissions than maintaining the current building (concrete production is a major contributor).
The government paid nearly $1 million for the report, and concluded that building a half-sized Science Centre at the old Ontario Place grounds could save the province $250 million over 50 years. It's worth noting that large projects often balloon in price once shovels hit the ground. For example: Ford's planned 15km subway line in Toronto, the Ontario Line, was supposed to cost ~$11 billion, but is now expected to cost ~$27 billion!
Speaking of the Ontario Line, let's backtrack a bit. The subway was announced in 2019, and was supposed to link the Ontario Science Centre in the North-East end of Toronto to Ontario Place in the South-West, while going through downtown. This project was announced just one month after a wealthy developer, said to have close ties with Ford, purchased 60 acres of land right across the street from the Science Centre. That land is currently being redeveloped. The wealthy developer in question apparently purchased multiple plots of land on the protected Greenbelt, for pennies on the dollar, before the PCs changed the zoning, allowing it to be developed.
The ~40 hectares (~100 acres) surrounding the Science Centre is an ecologically sensitive area next to a ravine, which the PCs plan to develop into housing. Since Ford announced the "Get it Done" act in 2024, among other legislative changes and designed to fast-track large and controversial projects (hwy 413 for one), there will be far less environmental oversight, as assessments windows have been shortened and review times slashed.
If Ford gets his way, the Ontario Science Centre will be replaced by a half-sized building at a controversial site, while "accommodating" a growing population, and a developer will benefit from bulldozing and building on an ecologically sensitive ravine. The Ontario Line subway will then link a brand new, wealthy neighbourhood to a luxury spa (which has no parking lot) that nobody asked for. Shockingly, yet somehow unsurprisingly, all of this is just the tip of the iceberg...
