The Sea Diamond was a cruise ship that sank near Santorini, Greece, on April 5, 2007. Shortly after departing the island, the vessel struck a submerged reef inside Santorini’s caldera. The collision tore a significant breach in the hull, allowing seawater to flood the ship and causing it to gradually lose stability.

Passengers and crew were evacuated as the situation worsened, while the ship developed an increasing list. Despite attempts to save the vessel, the flooding could not be contained. Approximately 8–10 hours after the initial impact, the Sea Diamond finally sank during the night. Tragically, two passengers were never found and remain missing to this day.

The wreck now rests on the steep underwater slopes of the caldera at a depth of roughly 90 meters. Rather than settling upright, the ship lies heavily heeled over on its starboard side. Due to the sloping seabed, the stern sits deeper while the bow remains at a slightly shallower depth, giving the wreck a pronounced downward angle. Over time, sections of the structure have deteriorated, yet the vessel’s overall shape is still clearly recognizable beneath the waters of Santorini.
