The 2nd Annual Kerrville Country & Western Jamboree was held on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th of July, 1976, in the outdoor theatre at Rod Kennedy's Quiet Valley Ranch in Kerrville, Texas. There was an impressive array of country music talent on hand for the three days which ranged from then current hit-makers like Cal Smith, Crystal Gayle and Moe Bandy, to C&W icons like Ernest Tubb, Hank Thompson, and a reunion band of Bob Wills' original Texas Playboys.
The show on Bicentennial Sunday, which was weighted heavily towared the old-timers, began with a Texas-sized downpour that delayed the start of things by two hours. The final set of the night - by Hank Thompson and the Brazos Valley Boys - didn't wind-up until 2:30am.
NPR's 'Folk Festival USA' radio program was there to record the Sunday show, and highlights were later broadcast over NPR stations in the US (the source of this recording).
The musicians in The Texas Troubadours were not identified during the broadcast with the exception of then current guitarist Pete Mitchell, and special guests Don Helms and Billy Byrd, whose names were called out by Tubb during their solos. Newspaper accounts, before and after the event, mention Billy Parker, Junior Pruneda, and Cal Smith all joining the 'Texas Troubadours reunion'.
Photo of Ernest Tubb appeared in the Houston Post in advance of this show. No photographer credited.
