Somalia - General Aideed Declared President

The two main rivals of Somali warlord, Mohamed Farah Aideed, have
ordered him to withdraw as newly-proclaimed president of Somalia
and to lend his support to a national peace conference. Aideed was
voted in as the new head of state on Thursday (15/6) during a
conference attended by his most loyal followers. Their action was
in retaliation against a similar conference held by Aideed's
rivals last weekend when he was ousted as leader of his clan's
militia, and replaced by his one-time friend, Osman Atto.
