One of the first records that I bought that was not an already established Northern Soul record was It's A Mess I Tell you by Ricky Allen backed by the great instrumental - Skate Boogaloo, so I have always had a soft spot for this unsung Chicago singer.
Ironic that in 1974 when I got it he was driving a yellow cab on the south and west side of Chicago.
This track particular was recorded for Four Brothers.
He was born in Nashville, Tennessee, and began his singing career as a member of a church choir in his home town. He moved to Chicago in 1958 and signed with Mel London's Age label in 1961. He had a local hit with "You Better Be Sure" and, in 1963, his hit "Cut You A-Loose" reached Number 20 in Billboard's R&B chart. Some of his recordings of the 1960s, such as "It's A Mess I Tell You" and "I Can't Stand No Signifying" became Northern Soul favourite's but were never really massive sounds on the scene.
In 1992 he was struck by a hit and run driver. He survived and planned to return to recording. Ke started performing again in the late nineties and was performing in Sweden in 2001. Ricky died in 2005 aged 70.
