Every year on January 19, Orthodox Christians celebrate Epiphany, commemorating the baptism of Jesus Christ in the Jordan River.
In Georgia, this tradition takes a unique and dramatic form at Paravani Lake — the highest and coldest lake in the country.
Despite freezing temperatures and thick ice, priests bless the water by cutting a cross-shaped hole in the ice. Believers then enter the icy lake, symbolizing spiritual cleansing, renewal, and faith.
Paravani Lake, located at 2,073 meters above sea level, often remains frozen in mid-winter, making this ceremony one of the coldest Epiphany celebrations in the region.
