The stunning weekend capture of Nicolás Maduro has sent shockwaves across the globe — and the fallout for Canada and Alberta could be massive.
With the United States now effectively steering Venezuela and its massive oil reserves, the geopolitical map just shifted. Not officially, of course… but in practical terms, Venezuela may have just become the 51st state.
Meanwhile, Canada is still debating whether a Memorandum of Understanding might someday, possibly, theoretically lead to the conditions for a pipeline to the West Coast. Years away. No project announced. No shovels. No timeline.
And here’s the kicker:
The U.S. suddenly has access to a major oil producer that can supply everything it needs — and more. Washington will almost certainly push Venezuelan oil onto global markets “to help the Venezuelan people,” while Canada continues to stall its own energy development.
So where does that leave us?
A Canada that’s sidelined. An Alberta that’s boxed out. And a federal government that may now be closer to becoming the 52nd state than building a pipeline.
What just happened may be good for global stability… but for Alberta and Canada, the consequences are entirely self‑inflicted.
