The Zong Massacre - The Paramount Reason Why Slave Trade Was Abolished.
The crew of the British 🇬🇧 slave ship “Zong” ran out of drinking water after a series of navigational errors by the Captain. The crew then threw over 130 enslaved Africans overboard as loss insured cargo to be claimed from the insurance company. This resulted in the controversial court case, Gregson v Gilbert (1783) which held that in some circumstances, the murder of enslaved Africans was legal and that insurers could be required to pay for those who had died. Because of the legal dispute, reports of the massacre received increased publicity, stimulating the Slave Abolitionist Movement which gave birth to the British Slave Trade Act 1807, which abolished British participation in the African slave trade and prohibiting insurance companies from reimbursing slave ship owners when enslaved Africans were murdered by being thrown overboard. At Black River in Jamaica 🇯🇲, there is a monument depicting the monstrous atrocities of the “Zong Massacre”. #history #slavery #zongmassacre #slaveship #adamskojosagoe
