David Bowie’s Beauty and the Beast, performed by Carlos Alomar’s D.A.M Trilogy band, recorded absolutely live at the sold-out concert at London’s Barbican Hall on the 28th of November 2025.
Carlos Alomar was David Bowie’s guitarist, arranger and band leader from the mid-1970’s to the late 1980’s. He led, what he later dubbed, The D.A.M. Trio – Bowie’s dedicated rhythm section from 1975 to 1980 - Alomar on guitar, Dennis Davis on drums and George Murray, on bass.
The D.A.M. Trilogy tour is Carlos Alomar’s tribute project honoring the music of Bowie’s “Berlin-era’, circa 1977-79. Carlos assembled a cast of musicians, including his former band mate, George Murray, to perform the iconic songs they helped create with Bowie and Dennis Davis, both of whom passed away in 2016. In November 2025, the band toured Europe and the UK.

Beauty and the Beast was the angular, abrasive opening track of David Bowie’s 1977 “Heroes” album. Bowie only performed it live during his 1978 tour. Perhaps he thought that beautiful monster groove was best left exclusively in the hands of his mighty D.A.M. Trio? It was a dream come true for me, and for many fans of Bowie's music from that era, that the surviving members of D.A.M. Trio finally reunited for the tour last year, performing the great Bowie music from that special time.
When the tour was first mooted, there were discussions about me joining the entire endeavor. However, logistics, budgets and existing responsibilities, didn’t allow for me to go on the road with Carlos and the band. Living and working in Hong Kong, with no immediate plans to travel to the West, I resigned myself to only enjoying the tour vicariously. As the final shows loomed, I cross examined myself about not experiencing any of the concerts first hand. With less than a week until the Barbican show, I booked a flight to London.
The next day, I was messaging a DJ/promoter mate, Steve Proctor; telling him I was going to be at the London show. He asked me if I was going to be filming the event. I told him I would love to, and semi-jokingly asked him if he knew any film crews that would work for free?! Steve took the question seriously, and said he would do everything he could to help make a shoot happen for me. The next day, he went to the Barbican and successfully negotiated with them to allow it.
I knew that the best chance to get decent material was to have my cinematographer and film-maker partner Bernd Pick come over from Germany to produce a shoot with me. I pretty much begged him to join. With less than two days to go, he booked a flight. Bernd brought with him an array of cameras and equipment. We also recruited friends and family and we borrowed cameras. In the end, there were five static cameras on stage, and four people with hand held cameras stationed at various locations around the hall.
At 8:00pm, the lights went down, and screens either side of the stage lit up with the words NACHO’S VIDEOS and we screened David Bowie performing Warszawa on the 1978 tour. David Bowie, Carlos Alomar, George Murray, Dennis Davis and others from the 1978 tour band, performing that sombre masterpiece was the perfect intro to a brilliant show by The D.A.M Trilogy.

With almost zero preparation time, a lot of venue restrictions and the lack of professional equipment and expertise, the resulting material that was captured was very uneven and quite problematic to utilize. Assessing the performances and material from the nine cameras and trying to create a coherent edit from them, has been very time consuming.
So this video is an example of what can be achieved by untrained novices with the application of passion, energy and a lot of post-production patience and trickery! It is intended a snapshot of that great concert, including the projection; the live performance, and a little of the soundcheck earlier that day.
Thanks for watching, I hope you dig it!
