Twin Low-Pressure Systems Brew Storms Over Indian Seas: Heavy Rains Lash South, More Deluge Expected
India braces for a wet onslaught as two well-marked low-pressure areas simmer over the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal, fueling forecasts of intense rainfall across the southern peninsula through the week.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for heavy to very heavy downpours—up to 20 cm in 24 hours—across south India from today until October 24, with extremely heavy falls of over 21 cm predicted to hammer Tamil Nadu on October 21 and 22, and Kerala on October 22.
In the past 24 hours ending at 8:30 AM IST today, the rains have already made their mark. Isolated pockets in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry recorded heavy to very heavy rainfall measuring 7-20 cm, while heavy showers of 7-11 cm drenched isolated areas in Kerala, Rayalaseema, and the coastal and southern interior regions of Karnataka.
