If you sing or play madrigals about battle, it seems like it would be a great deal of fun, and it's always the same: drums, trumpets, gallant soldiers, and we win, of course! We know very well that war isn't actually like that, and the battle of Kassala (1894) depicted in the painting was an absolute slaughter in the Sudan. Italy had under 70 casualties (dead and wounded) and the Mahdi troops suffered over 1,400. The Italians gave the area back to the English three years later and remains of English governance remained until 1909. At the time much of Europe was trying to colonize bits of Africa and fighting not only the native people who didn't want to be colonized, and each other.
Banchieri's music, however, is a joy published almost 300 years before that conflict and unlike some other battle settings of the Renaissance, you could sing it as well as play it. While the collection is described as being "in the French style" the double choir back-and-forth is definitely Italian.
