We're with John Kelly, John is a personal injury lawyer in Phoenix, Arizona. He's agreed to answer an online question. This question was specifically related to future medical bills, as well as, in this case personal burn injuries. So, with that said, let me go into the question, it was posted by Alan, Alan said, "I have burn injuries from an accident. "I'm told that I'll need a series of operations "to repair the damage, that this could take "a couple of years. "I need the settlement money now, "but what happens with my future medical expenses?"

It's a great question from Alan, and burn injuries are notorious for having future medical expenses, just because of all the repair surgeries that typically need to be done. In Alan's situation, he's gonna have potentially several surgeries in the future and the question is, well if I settle it now, how are those surgeries gonna get paid for? So what I do in these kind of cases ... are gonna be needed in the future to the best of our ability ... hire someone to evaluate his claim, usually a doctor that has experience with burns and knows what kind of injuries my client has and can relate that to other people that have had similar injuries and what kind of surgeries they require. He'll then write a report that we'll use for the insurance company and say, look, this is our best estimate of what's gonna happen in the future, you not only have to pay for the injuries that he has currently, and the medical expenses that he's incurred thus far, but you also have to pay for his future medical expenses, and that's something that the insurance companies are required to do in this type of circumstance. So, it's definitely something that comes up a lot in these types of cases, it's very important to get the right people in place to get the right diagnosis and evaluation done so that we can show the insurance companies or whoever we're working with that we have an injury that's gonna require future expenses and these are exactly what we believe they're gonna be in a report that we then create into a demand.
