"I Will Always Love You"
While famous as Whitney Houston's powerhouse anthem, the song has a tender, surprising history rooted in country music.

The Origin: The song was written and originally recorded by Dolly Parton in 1973. Contrary to popular belief, it is not a romantic breakup song. Parton wrote it as a professional farewell to her mentor and on-screen partner, Porter Wagoner. She wanted to leave his TV show to pursue a solo career, but he wouldn't listen. She wrote the song to express her gratitude and love while firmly asserting her need to leave.

The Whitney Version (1992): For The Bodyguard, Kevin Costner suggested the song, and David Foster arranged it as a soulful R&B ballad. Whitney Houston
