Greed, fear, desperation, they can all cause us to do unspeakable things. The forester Kaspar has sold his soul to the devil, and it is the day before he must pay his debt. He is living on borrowed time, and he will do anything to extend his lease. Max, another forester, is desperate to win the hand of Agathe, the daughter of his and Kaspar's boss, thereby securing his place as the next head forester.
