Play, Choice and Self-Regulation in Early Childhood.
Abstract: Drawing particularly on three research projects with which the author has been engaged, this presentation looks at self-regulation in young children up to the age of 8 years, with particular reference to the role of play, choice and agency. Definitions of self-regulation are problematized, alongside a consideration of the importance of supporting and developing young children’s self-regulation. A framework for observing and supporting young children’s self-regulation is used as an organising device for looking at the role of child-initiated, child-chosen and child-controlled activity, and at contexts which may be particularly supportive of self-regulatory development. Potential ways forward in the development of interventions to support self-regulatory development in young children are considered.
