ENGLISH SUBTITLE
Thaisen Rusch - Tenor
I am very happy to be able to accompany Thaisen Rusch in the production and release of his new CD. Thaisen, whom I have known for many years and value both as a friend and as a musician, presents an extraordinarily rich, nuanced, and deeply personal interpretation of Franz Schubert’s Winterreise.
The recording is complemented by a 25th song by the composer Nazanin Piri-Niri, who passed away far too early. Written especially for Thaisen Rusch, this piece adds a distinctive contemporary dimension to the cycle.
The video portrait:
Fremd (The Outsider) is a cinematic portrait about voice, belonging, and the question of how a classical work can speak to the present.
Starting from Franz Schubert’s Winterreise, the film tells a story of radical reduction: no stage, no orchestra, no staging — only voice, piano, text, and breath. The tenor Thaisen Rusch reflects on his personal approach to the cycle, on early musical influences, formative experiences of nature in Finland, and the gradual understanding of the work’s existential depth.
The film interweaves this musical exploration with biographical experiences of alienation and exclusion. Thaisen speaks about racist hostility encountered in everyday life and within professional contexts, which ultimately led to the rupture of a permanent theatre engagement. Winterreise thus becomes a mirror of contemporary experience: loneliness, disorientation, and the act of continuing despite inner and outer cold.
Schubert’s cycle is further complemented by a Nachtlied by the late composer Nazanin Piri-Niri, dedicated to Thaisen. This contemporary piece opens a quiet, intimate space of resonance and points to the enduring relevance of Winterreise today.
Fremd is not a music film in the classical sense, but a reflection on dignity, identity, and wandering as an existential movement — about detours, ruptures, and the attempt not to lose one’s inner compass.
The CD is available on all major streaming and download platforms.
