Police departments have relied on advanced technology for years, from license plate readers and facial recognition systems to body cameras; however, artificial intelligence is now moving into one of the most time-consuming aspects of policing: writing police reports.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, some departments are now utilizing AI software that directly connects to officers’ body cameras. When an officer uploads footage, the system sends the audio to the cloud, where AI transcribes what was said and generates a first draft of a police report in minutes instead of hours. The goal is straightforward: reduce time spent behind a desk and keep officers in the field.
How AI police report writing works
To be clear, the AI is not “watching” video or making judgment calls. It only transcribes audio. Officers are encouraged to narrate events in real time because the report is built entirely from what is spoken aloud. As one DOJ-cited example explains, if an officer verbally notes that a suspect “appears intoxicated,” the body-camera footage can later be reviewed to support or contradict that statement.
