On my way to the Shoalhaven to transport some batties to Trista, Janine phones me again (like she did last time), asking me where I am and if I can divert to rescue a bat stuck in netting in the Kangaroo Valley, because they had nobody who can get there during the day.
So of course, what's a little 45 km diversion when a bat is involved?
I attended the rescue of a lovely couple who had recently moved to this area and had nearly divorced over getting the netting over their backyard row of fig trees (and a pomegranate tree I think).
The netting had holes in it and gaps and there were so many birds availing themselves of the free fruit, and as soon as the MOPs let them out of the netting tunnel they found themselves back into the tunnel.
Being new to the area and the fruit tree vs native wildlife issue, they called for help when they found a bat under the netting.
This bat wasn't actually tangled, just under the netting, and he declined to leave of his own volition, which was awkward for the MOPs who were trying to salvage at least some of their fruit.
Since the bat was loose under the netting, I also declined to evict the bat. Bats under netting (specially a tunnel of netting including more than 10 trees), is a job for more than one person and I was on a time schedule. I could have chased the batty around the tree for a few hours but I'm not one to beat my head against a brick wall substitute just for the entertainment value, so I kicked it over to Janine and her rescuers for an evening of entertainment for a few more people.
3 people actually spent 2 hours chasing this batty around the tunnel of netted trees, finally succeeding in catching him and checking him out.
He has since been released and flying free again.
YAY for survivors (and teams of rescuers).
