We met Olodum at the 2026 Carnival in Salvador, Brazil
Olodum is a Brazilian cultural group and bloco afro (Afro-Brazilian carnival percussion ensemble) founded in 1979 in the historic Pelourinho district of Salvador. Known for its powerful samba-reggae rhythm, Olodum blends Afro-Brazilian percussion traditions with Caribbean and African influences, creating a style that became globally influential.
Beyond music, Olodum is a major social movement that promotes Afro-Brazilian pride, education, and cultural preservation, especially among youth in Salvador. The group gained international recognition through collaborations with artists such as Paul Simon and Michael Jackson—notably appearing in the video for the song They Don’t Care About Us filmed in Salvador.
Today, Olodum remains one of the most recognizable symbols of Afro-Brazilian music and culture, especially during Carnival in Salvador.
