This is a cutup of most of the snaps of the 2024 Eagles defense playing Cover 8, which in layman’s terms is Cover 2 to the passing strength and Cover 4 weak. In Fangio’s system, any Halves/Quarters split coverage is what’s known as a “Roy/Lou” mechanism that dictates where the Halves side is. In Cover 8, the “Roy/Lou” call is TO the Nickel DB’s side (Nickel always aligns to the passing strength) so the Strong Safety knows to take a Deep 1/2 drop. This is a match zone coverage with the release of #3 dictating responsibilities.
Against normal 3x1 formations, there will be a “Trix” adjustment so that the Weak Safety can overtake any vertical by #3 rather than having the Mike LB responsible for all of it. “Trix” technique is a portmanteau of “#3-to-X” since the Weak Safety is cross-keying #3 strong and working to squeeze the ‘X’ is there’s no vertical to help on.
Against Bunch formations, the coverage stays as a Halves structure by playing what’s called “Squat” against it.
