Empress Elisabeth of Austria, known as Sisi, was celebrated as the most beautiful woman in Europe during the 19th century. Her tall, slender frame, porcelain complexion, and famously long hair made her an icon of elegance, but her beauty also became a source of immense pressure. Determined to preserve her youthful appearance, Sisi withdrew from public life after turning 30, refusing to be seen as she aged. Her obsession with beauty led to extreme diets—she ate very little, often just broth, milk, or eggs—and maintained a weight of around 110 pounds, with a waist measuring only 19 inches at her death. This pursuit of perfection defined much of her life, alongside rigorous exercise routines and elaborate beauty rituals.
Despite her outward allure, Sisi was profoundly unhappy. A series of personal tragedies, including the death of her young daughter Sophie and the suicide of her son Crown Prince Rudolf, left her emotionally shattered. Her dissatisfaction with the rigid expectations of court life and her growing depression drove her to seek solace in constant travel and isolation. Tragically, she was assassinated in 1898 while traveling incognito in Geneva, an ironic end for someone who so often sought to escape the public eye. Today, Sisi is remembered as both a symbol of grace and a tragic figure, whose life reflected the immense burdens of beauty, royalty, and personal sorrow.
