The small spa town, surrounded by the Strážov Hills, lies about 15 km north of Trenčín, in the valley of the Teplička stream. Every year, guests come to the city with four thousand inhabitants for a peaceful forest environment, but primarily for health.

The history of the Trenčianske Teplice spa goes back a long way. Official origins date back to the Middle Ages, but it is possible that hot springs were used in prehistoric or ancient times. Spa development has always progressed. Even the various owners, the wars or changes in political establishments, did not detract from the popularity and number of visitors to the spa in Trenčianske Teplice.

According to legend, the healing springs were discovered by an old, poor shepherd who, as usual, drove his herd through the Trenčín valley. Once on his pass, he discovered a lake from which the smell was spreading. One of the sheep stood in the middle of the lake, urinating her injured leg. The shepherd watched her for several days. He noticed that the sheep's leg had healed and its mobility had returned. Therefore, he decided that he would also bathe in the lake. Every day, the old shepherd went bathing in the healing waters, which eventually restored his health.

The area around the thermal springs has been inhabited since the Stone Age. One of the most important monuments in Slovakia is located on the Trenčín castle rock. The inscription left here by the Romans at the end of the 2nd century AD speaks of the camping of Roman soldiers on the territory of today's Trenčín. The Romans probably also used thermal waters around Trenčianske Teplice. However, there is no evidence of this.

The first official mention of thermal springs comes from the middle of the 13th century. The surroundings of today's Trenčianske Teplice and the adjacent settlements fell under the Trenčín estate in the Middle Ages. The spa has been owned by the Illésházy family for more than two centuries.
The most important owner of the spa was Count Štefan Illésházy, who stimulated the development of the spa. He had several new buildings built and made the spa available to the public. During this period, the spa was one of the most important spas in Austria - Hungary.

In 1835, they were bought by the Viennese banker Georg Sina, who rebuilt and modernized the spa. His son ordered the construction of a hotel and expanded the spa park. The daughter of Ifigénia had the most important monument of Trenčianske Telice, the Turkish bath Hammam, built today. She saw the model of the bath at the World's Fair in Paris. She was so fascinated that she traveled to Egypt and asked permission to build a hammam in Trenčianske Teplice. The construction of Hammam ended in 1888.

In 1909, the Hungarian Banking and Trading Company bought the spa. In 1918, they were taken over by the Czechoslovak Participating Society of Healing Spas. During the war, other spa buildings were built.

Stagnation in the development of the spa occurred in the period after World War II. There was no investment and traffic was declining. Radical changes took place in the 1960s and 1970s. During this period, the city center was rehabilitated and reorganized. Much of the original historic core has been destroyed. The new modern medical houses in Crimea, Pax and Hotel Slovakia thus became the center of the spa.

Current spa in Trenčianske Teplice
The spa was taken over in 1995 by the Slovak Medical Spa. At present, the spa of the joint-stock company, which changed its name to Kúpele Trenčianske Teplice, a.s.
The spa center is dominated by the spa hotels Crimea, Pax and Hotel Slovakia. The modernized facilities offer visitors a comprehensive spa treatment or short-term relaxation stays along with a wide range of treatments and hotel services.
