Today’s Get Ready With Me livestream is deeply personal.

I’m sharing this moment in honor of my son, who was born with an omphalocele. He was first diagnosed in utero at 18 weeks, and the diagnosis was later confirmed at my 20-week anatomy scan. Like many parents, that moment changed everything — and began a journey filled with learning, strength, faith, and resilience.

What is an Omphalocele?
An omphalocele is a congenital abdominal wall defect where some of a baby’s organs (such as the intestines and sometimes the liver) develop outside of the abdomen, enclosed in a thin protective sac at the base of the umbilical cord. This condition occurs very early in pregnancy while the abdominal wall is forming.

How common is it?
Omphalocele occurs in approximately 1 in every 4,000–6,000 live births.

What causes it?
There is no single known cause. Omphalocele can be associated with genetic or chromosomal conditions, but it can also occur on its own. In many cases, the exact cause is unknown. What is known is that early diagnosis allows families and medical teams to prepare for the care a baby may need after birth.

This livestream — and the black, white, and silver look — is part of my way of honoring my son, raising awareness, and standing in solidarity with other families who have walked or are walking a similar path.
