দেবী সতী দক্ষ রাজার অমতে মহাদেবকে বিবাহ করেছিলেন। প্রতিশোধ নেওয়ার উদ্দেশে একটি যজ্ঞের আয়োজন করেছিলেন দক্ষ রাজা। যজ্ঞের আগুনে আত্মঘাতী হন সতী। ক্রোধে উন্মত্ত হয়ে ওঠেন মহাদেব। পৃথিবী ধ্বংস হওয়ার ভয়ে ভগবান বিষ্ণু প্রলয় থামাতে সুদর্শন চক্র পাঠিয়ে দেন। দেবীর দেহ ৫১টি খণ্ডে বিভক্ত হয়ে বিভিন্ন জায়গায় পড়ে। এই সব কটি জায়গাকে সতীপীঠ বলা হয়। সতীর ৫১ পীঠ হিন্দু ধর্মে খুবই গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। এই জায়গাগুলি প্রত্যেক হিন্দুর কাছে পরম পবিত্রের জায়গা।
