How does cocaine get to Europe? Where does it enter? And how has the Albanian Mafia mastered cocaine trafficking into Europe and taken over both the European and UK cocaine markets?

In the previous episode we covered how Albanian criminals have established themselves in Latin America, forged contacts with cocaine cartels in the continent and secured a supply of cheap cocaine. Now we turn our attention to Europe, and how Albanian organised crime gangs have flooded the ports of Antwerp and Rotterdam - and dozens of others across the continent - with tonnes of cocaine, dramatically lowered the wholesale price of cocaine in Europe, and helped meet the demand for record amounts of cocaine use in the UK and Europe.

With their network of alliances on the continent with Italian mafia groups such as the ‘Ndrangheta, Dutch and Moroccan gangs helping them remove cocaine from Europe’s northern ports, and providing the cocaine supply for UK drug gangs, the Albanian Mafia has used their reputation for reliability and for violence, their knack for forging working relationships, and a sense of business acumen to become highly successful cocaine traffickers without coming into conflict with other groups - reducing cocaine prices and increasing cocaine purity along the way.

But their takeover of the market - with Albanian suppliers almost completely dominating the UK’s cocaine trade, which is the biggest cocaine market in Europe - has still led to increased levels of bloodshed, with the increased availability of cocaine contributing to a rise in gang violence as the drug trade spreads to new markets, with the county lines phenomenon coinciding with increased drug-related violence, featuring ever younger victims and perpetrators.
