We got lucky this time. A slip and fall resulting in a serious injury in the middle of a 13-mile stretch with no access points could have been a disaster. When Jazz went down on a rocky stretch of trail, we were prepared for the worse. Snake was carrying his new Garmin Inreach satellite communicator for the first time. Would we need to use it already? Fortunately, Jazz came out of it with just a bruised pinky finger. Disaster averted!
We headed into Section 4 of the Appalachian Trail in Pennsylvania knowing full well we were looking at a 13-mile stretch of trail that had no other road crossings or trail intersections which would allow us to break it into smaller hikes or give us any bailout points along the way. Being the middle of the winter season, we had a great weather window to get this done. All the recent snow had melted from a recent warmup and rainfall. But the trail was wet and a little icy in many spots which presented some difficulties leading to Jazz taking a fall.
The first half of the day went really well. The sun was out, the trail was mostly a flat woods road walk, and we started out at a great pace. But then the trail turned rocky, the winds picked up, thick clouds darkened the sky, and we were hit with a few back-to-back snow squalls. Somehow, we managed to persevere and finish before sunset. We'll count this one as a big success!
