Presented by Dr. Jake Walsh, Assistant Professor, University of Minnesota Department of Fisheries, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology (FWCB). Additional credit is attributable to Jill Sweet, Research & Monitoring Technician, Minnehaha Creek Watershed District.
Common carp removal can improve water quality and restore aquatic plant communities under certain ecological conditions. To better understand the factors that influence management success, researchers evaluated lake responses (carp biomass, water quality, and aquatic plants) to carp removals across 90 carp removals, 15 of which had all necessary data to assess change with management. Dr. Walsh discusses project results that highlighted the inherent variability of lake responses to management and reinforced the importance of ecological context and the careful selection of lakes suitable for carp management.
