Through video documentation, large pigment prints, and a photobook, C.R.O.W.N, short for Create a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair, celebrates the contemporary Black woman and her hair for all its unique attributes. It depicts how hair is worn in everyday life. The images illustrate natural curls, ‘locs, braids, and afro's that started through African cultural techniques. Black hair is considered to be our crown. It is worn with pride and is also a way to express our individuality and creativity. The video documents the inordinate amount of time it takes to complete each hairstyle shown in the exhibition. This is necessary to the viewer's understanding of the time spent on a style that can be worn for a week or more. The process of taking care of black hair is part of our culture and contributes to the appreciation of our unique natural beauty. The tan/brownish background compliments the skin of a black woman and the specific warm and neutral palette keeps the focus on the hair without distractions. The fashion choices and color for each piece complements each hairstyle and allows for a different look for each image. The same tools used in the fashion industry have been researched and utilized to achieve a more polished and sharp feel to the body of work, creating a sense of familiarity with magazine work that we see in the world today. Black hair as a whole can function within everyday life and women can have fun and not be afraid to show off bright or over-the-top hairstyles that are beautiful and make us stand out in this world.
