ANOKA, Minn. -- This week marks the 75th anniversary of a tornado that changed the face of Anoka forever.
It was Father's Day, June 18th, 1939 when an EF5 tornado crossed from Hennepin County over the Mississippi River and into the city of Anoka and points north. In all, the storm killed nine people and 250 homes were destroyed.
Anoka has since recovered from the disaster which inspired the local high school's identity.
Todd Mahon from Anoka County Historical Society says, "Today the Anoka High Schools team mascot is the Tornadoes and that comes from this 1939 tornado. They didn't take the name immediately afterworld but it wasn't very long after that they took the name and it stuck ever since. I think that's why people remember it so much, I mean, it's right there on the water tower: Home of the Tornadoes."
Tom Ward, who's now 90-years-old, lived through the storm. You can hear his harrowing story on this month's "Community Close Up" which airs right here on CTN. Just check the channel schedule for playback dates and times.
