Gus Gerard was an excellent player coming out of Virginia. He was an athletic 6’8 forward who could do it all. He loved to leak out in transition for a fastbreak dunk, but he could play in the halfcourt as well, taking his man off the dribble and finishing in the paint with relative ease. Gus also used his physical gifts on the defensive end, as he could guard multiple positions and block shots. He wasn’t the greatest shooter, but that doesn’t mean you could leave him open. Gus was a part of the brand new Spirits of St. Louis, filling in for when Marvin went AWOL and Joe Caldwell got released. He was an all-star in his second season, but once he got to the NBA, he could never produce at the same level, mostly due to his drug and alcohol issues. While Gus didn’t have the career that most people expected, he was still an exciting part of one of the most interesting teams in basketball history.
