On The Urban Debate with Tanvi Shukla, Mumbai's COVID crisis was being discussed. According to Mumbai's serosurvey findings conducted by BMC based on 6,936 samples, antibodies are found in 40 percent of people, and 57 percent of people living in the slums and 16 percent of people were found living in housing societies were exposed to COVID-19 infection.
Dr. Jayanti Shastri, Head of Microbiology, Nair Hospital, and Head, Molecular Lab, Kasturba Hospital explains that the most important question is if these antibodies persist beyond three months. Another round is said to take place in August and then the team will collect samples and compare.
In a population of six-seven thousand people in three wards, is not a reflection of the entire Mumbai city, what is needed is large serosurvey comprising of all 24 wards, explains Dr. Rahul Pandit of Fortis Hospitals and member of Maharashtra's COVID-19 taskforce.
Dr. Shashank Joshi, Dean, Indian College of Physicians, Lilavati Hospital, and member of COVID-19 taskforce further adds that this is a surprise result in the slum population, he also states that the numbers are seen in clinical practice and the surveys are reported are often divergent.
