San Diego Elementary School in Quezon City, with over 7,300 students including 78 neurodivergent learners, launched a project to promote healthy eating and sustainable gardening. Recognizing that many students—especially those with special needs—struggled with poor nutrition and food aversions, the school aimed to build healthier habits through hands-on, and inclusive learning.
The initiative began with a healthy eating survey and evolved into a multi-faceted programme involving students, parents, and teachers. Activities included sensory-friendly food presentations, a nutrition seminar for parents, and the creation of a class recipe book featuring family recipes and student artwork. Neurodivergent students also prepared eggplant burgers, demonstrating teamwork and communication skills.
To promote sustainability, families received soil and seeds to start home gardens, building on the school’s existing garden that supports its healthy eating programme. The project empowered families to grow their own vegetables and share surplus produce with others.
The initiative benefited students, families, and the wider community by improving nutrition, encouraging collaboration, and fostering a love for healthy food. Students now look forward to cooking activities, and parents are eager to try new recipes – planting the seeds for lasting change.
