Brooks Instrument explains the principle of operation behind our third-generation Coriolis mass flow meter from our QMC Series. The Coriolis flow meter is designed for precision low-flow gas and liquid applications such as catalyst research, mass balance calculations in pilot plants, and more.
When power is applied, the drive circuit causes the high-performance sensor tube to vibrate at its natural frequency. When there is no flow going through the sensor tube, the two legs of the sensor are moving in the same plane. When flow is introduced, the tube begins to twist and now has angular momentum. The fluid entering the tube has no angular momentum. There is a transfer of momentum from the tube to the fluid creating a drag on the inlet side of the tube all resulting in a phase shift between the two legs of the tube. They are no longer moving in the same plane. The phase difference is directly proportional to the mass flow going through the sensor tube.
As the phase shift is measured by the Coriolis sensor, the signals are processed by the on board sensor electronics. The sensor electronics interpret the data with advanced signal processing and translates it into a flow output signal.
The operator sends a flow setpoint signal, the control electronic compares the flow signal to the operator's setpoint signal. If the setpoint is higher than the measured flow, the controller will open the control valve allowing more flow to move through. If the setpoint is lower than the flow output, the controller will close the control valve allowing less flow to move through.
When considering a Coriolis mass flow meter, look for a flow meter that is robust, reliable with supporting advanced alarms and diagnostics from Brooks Instrument. Through advanced alarms and diagnostics, it can monitor and correct issues before the overall process is negatively affected.
How will the Coriolis meter help:
1. Improve process quality, yield, and throughput.
2. Reduce the scale-up time from lab to pilot plant to production
3. Lower cost of ownership
