This student-led fund that turns everyday fees into real, measurable change, while providing students with real world skills and experience that inspires and engages campus stakeholders.
In today’s video, you’ll meet the Northern Arizona University Green Fund Student Committee and see how a $15-per-semester student green fee becomes roughly $540,000 a year invested into campus sustainability. Since 2012, they’ve awarded $6 million. You’ll hear how students—not staff—drive the decisions, reviewing proposals, debating impact, and voting each week to fund projects that cut emissions and build a culture of sustainability.
We’ll highlight the wins: closing funding gaps to electrify fleet vehicles (including a Ford Lightning police aid vehicle), helping unlock major grants through cash matches for electric buses and water conservation, and supporting campus programs like CalSense water monitoring and reusables that nearly eliminate single-use plastics in dining.
And the results are big: a virtual power purchasing agreement projected to reduce Scope 2 emissions by 54%, and a major energy partnership aiming to cut Scope 1 emissions by 42%.
Stick around for the practical lessons—governance, outreach, reporting, and the “art” of choosing what gets funded—so you can adapt this model at your own institution.
