In this video, CE Blocks breaks down a problem under Steel Connections, an essential topic in Civil Engineering included in Principles of Structural Analysis and Design, a part of the Civil Engineering Licensure Examination.
Situation:
The butt connection shows 8-22 mm-Φ bolts with the following details:
– s1 = 40 mm, s2 = 80 mm, s3 = 50 mm, s4 = 100 mm
– Thickness of plates (top & bottom): t1 = 12 mm
– Thickness of middle plate: t2 = 16 mm
– Yield Strength: Fy = 248 MPa
– Ultimate Strength: Fu = 400 MPa
– Allowable tensile strength on gross area: 0.6Fy
– Allowable tensile strength on net area: 0.5Fu
– Bearing stress on projected area: fp = 1.5Fu
– Allowable bolt shear stress: Fv = 120 MPa
Find the allowable tensile load, in kN, based on:
1. Tension on the gross area of the plate
2. Tension on the net area of the plate assuming the hole diameter is 3 mm more than the bolt diameter
3. Bolt shear
4. Bearing on the projected area on plate
