Lakota historian and author Nick Estes says President Trump violated Indigenous sovereignty over the Black Hills area when he held an Independence Day rally at Mount Rushmore, sparking protests that led to 15 arrests. One of those arrested is Nick Tilsen, president & CEO of the Indigenous group NDN Collective. He faces a number of charges, including a "second-degree robbery" charge that carries a sentence of up to 10 years in prison. "When Trump is talking about erasing history, he’s actually suppressing history," says Estes, who notes that the 1968 Fort Laramie Treaty legally recognized Indigenous sovereignty over the area. "The people who were arrested at this particular blockade were arrested because they were representing the true histories."
