On Match 29th 2024, the Japanese government added the automobile transportation industry to the specified skilled worker visa for foreigners.
What does this mean?
This means that foreigners who have a class 2 driver's license can work as a taxi or a bus driver in Japan. Additionally, this will enable foreigners to have a specified skill worker visa.

Amid a serious labor shortage, prefectures across Japan are moving to offer tests for class 2 driver's licenses in English to utilize foreign workers' skills.

What is a Class 2 driver's license in Japan?
With this license, you can drive large sized passenger bus, middle sized passenger bus, large sightseeing bus, taxi, hire etc

The written test for a class 1 driver's license for general drivers had been available in Japanese, English and Chinese but the class 2 exam was previously available only in Japanese. Since May 13th 2024, people have been given the choice to take the Class 2 test in English as well. This paves the way for most foreigners.

Chiba prefectural police is the first to have started offering written tests for Class 2 commercial driver's licenses in Japan in English.

Foreigners who have never owned a driver's license, you will need to go to any driving school of your choice in Japan. But foreigners who came to Japan, with their country's driver's license, here are the steps to convert either the Class 1 ( general drivers) or Class 2 ( Commercial drivers) driver's license to Japanese driver's license.
1. Get your country's license translated into Japanese language.
2.Submit the required documents at your prefectural driving center.
3. Take a hearing and eyesight test.
4. Take a written test to assess your knowledge of traffic rules.
5. Take a practical driving test.
