Active pickups - unwanted distortion? Try changing the battery!

So today my active Fishman Fluence Modern pickups were sounding really distorted on clean settings - with every plugin, every gain setting, every pickup/voicing combination... I was getting pretty worried, until I found some comments about changing the battery - and IT WORKED!
So if anybody is having the same issue, try changing the battery first - I was totally ready to start messing with my action, my pickup height and everything, because I was hearing some buzz, so I figured it could have been that .. but no! Just a new battery and you're chilling! I thought that when the battery is dying, it just starts cutting in and out, or it gets really quiet .. but I didn't know it could have this effect on the gain.
