Why Is the Royal Navy Retiring Its Frigates Early?

Britain built its Type 23 frigates in the Cold War to hunt Soviet submarines: cheaply, and to last about eighteen years. More than thirty years on, the Royal Navy is retiring them years ahead of plan. Monmouth, Montrose, Westminster, Argyll, Northumberland, Lancaster, Iron Duke and Richmond have gone. Five are left, and the government's latest plan retires them up to 2033.
This film explains why: what made the Type 23 such a good submarine hunter, how the Navy stretched a ship built for 18 years to more than 30, what actually wears out in a warship's hull, the six-year check-up every frigate has to pass, why money finished some of them before the steel did, who is left to hunt submarines, and when the last Type 23 will actually go.

Should Britain keep its last Type 23s going to 2033, or retire them sooner? Tell us in the comments.
