B-2, U.S. long-range stealth bomber that first flew in 1989 and was delivered to the U.S. Air Force starting in 1993. Built and maintained by Northrop Grumman Corporation, the B-2 is a “flying wing,” a configuration consisting essentially of a short but very broad wing with no fuselage and tail. This design gives the B-2 a length (69 feet, or 21 meters) only slightly greater than that of a fighter yet gives it a wingspan (172 feet, or 52.4 meters) approaching that of its gigantic predecessor, the B-52 Stratofortress. The bomber uses stealth materials and shapes to make it effectively immune to detection at normal combat ranges. The largest strike using B-2 bombers took place on June 21, 2025, when the aircraft attacked nuclear sites in Iran.
The B-2 holds the record for longest air combat mission in history. In 2001, the Spirit of America and five other B-2s were the first to enter Afghan airspace for a record setting 44-hour mission. The aircraft’s performance is even more impressive in that the B-2 made a quick pit stop for a 45-minute crew and service change with engines still running. It then flew back to Missouri for another 30-hour flight for a total of more than 70 consecutive hours.
